SUMMARY:Keeping Georgia on the EU-Enlargement Agenda: Visit of Georgian Civil Society Representatives to Brussels
DESCRIPTION:Background \nAs Georgia faces its most serious political crisis since independence\, the country is rapidly sliding (or has already slid) into authoritarianism under the current ruling party – the Georgian Dream. The adoption of repressive laws—including legislation inspired by the Russian “foreign agents” model\, American FARA\, new media regulations\, and new laws curbing the human rights\, including freedom of speech and assembly—signals an open crackdown on civil society\, media\, political opposition\, and pro-European voices. This backsliding threatens not only the country’s democratic fabric but also its European future. This also firmly places Georgia in the Russian orbit. \nIn this critical moment\, a group of leading Georgian civil society representatives will visit Brussels to brief key EU institutions\, political groups\, and partners about the situation on the ground. The delegation\, organized by the Center of Liberal Modernity and the Konrad Adenauer Stiftung European Office brings together diverse expertise and networks\, unified by a shared commitment to democratic values and the defense of Georgia’s European path. \nPurpose \nThe purpose of the visit is to provide EU stakeholders with a timely and accurate briefing on the deepening political crisis in Georgia\, marked by the ruling party’s authoritarian drift and escalating repression against independent voices. The delegation will focus on the implications of recently adopted draconian laws targeting civil society\, media\, and political opponents—legislation that threatens to dismantle Georgia’s democratic foundations and derail its European integration path. \nParticipants \n\nMarieluise Beck\, Senior Fellow\, LibMod\nKhatia Kikalishvili\, Program Director\, Eastern Partnership\, LibMod\nSergi Kapanadze\, Co-Founder\, Georgia’s Reforms Associates (GRASS)\nTina Khidasheli\, Founder\, Civic IDEA\nNino Chachava\, Coordinator EU Integration\, Civil Society Foundation (CSF)\nSaba Brajveli\, Human Rights Program Manager\, Civil Society Foundation (CSF)
