SUMMARY:Inter­na­tional Rethinking Liberalism Confe­rence: Challenges to Liberalism in Turbulent Times
DESCRIPTION:.\n\nInvi­ta­tion to Inter­na­tional Rethin­king Libe­ra­lism Conference\nChal­lenges to Libe­ra­lism in Tur­bu­lent TimesDate: Thurs­day\, January 16\, 9.30am‑8.00pm (CET)\n\n\n\n\nLoca­tion: Allianz Forum Berlin\, Pariser Platz 6\, 10117 Berlin \n.The current state of libe­ra­lism is a cause for great concern. The most recent and most conse­quential example of the domi­nant illi­be­ral swing is the stun­ning come­back of Donald Trump in the United States. Right-wing popu­list forces are in govern­ment in Italy\, Slo­va­kia\, Hungary\, the Nether­lands and many other count­ries. Count­ries like Poland\, where a natio­nal-popu­list govern­ment has been voted out\, are the excep­tion. To get out of the liberal defen­sive\, there needs to be a better under­standing of the causes of the crisis of liberal demo­cracy and the rise of popu­lism. Fur­ther­more\, fresh ideas are needed on how liberal demo­cracy should be renewed to regain support domesti­cally and inter­na­tio­nally. Key ques­ti­ons we want to discuss: \n\nDo the insti­tu­tions of demo­cracy need to be refor­med\, and the possi­bi­lities of demo­cra­tic parti­ci­pation expanded?\nHow can the perfor­mance of liberal demo­cra­cies be impro­ved in the face of huge poli­ti­cal\, eco­no­mic and ecolo­gical challenges?\nHow should they deal with core issues on the popu­list agenda – such as the issue of migration?\nWhat follows from the concept of a “robust demo­cracy” – and how do we avoid slip­ping into an autho­ri­tarian logic in the name of defen­ding freedom?\nHow should liberal demo­cra­cies deal with the new sys­te­mic con­flict with autho­ri­tarian powers\, espe­ci­ally China and Russia?\nWhich gaps and malde­ve­lo­p­ments in libe­ra­lism itself contri­buted to its crisis?\nHow can liberal demo­crats counter the “poli­tics of emo­ti­ons” of popu­list actors?\n\nOn January 16\, you can expect a full day of inspi­ring discus­sions and lots of room for net­wor­king with liberal minds from various count­ries. DESCRIPTION:Publi­ka­ti­ons­vor­stellung & Diskussion \n30. Januar\, 09–10:15 Uhr \nOnline\, auf Zoom \nDass die Erder­wärmung auf 1\,5°C begrenzt werden kann\, wird zuneh­mend unwahr­schein­licher. Jüngste Trends zeigen\, dass wir bis Anfang der 2030er Jahre mit ziem­li­cher Sicher­heit 1\,5°C über­schrei­ten werden\, selbst wenn die Bemü­hun­gen um eine rasche Redu­zie­rung der Emis­sio­nen zuneh­men. Deshalb beschäf­tigt sich die wissen­schaft­liche Lite­ra­tur\, so zum Bei­spiel der IPCC\, zuneh­men mit „Over­shoot“ – die Über­schrei­tung von 1\,5°C und anschlie­ßende Rück­kehr der Tempe­ratur bis zum Ende des Jahrhunderts. \nAndy Rei­sin­ger (Mit­glied des IPCC\, Neusee­län­di­sches Forschungs­zentrum für Treib­hausgase) stellt das neue Facts­heet „Over­shoot: can we exceed and return to 1\,5°C?“ vor und disku­tiert mit uns die klima­ti­schen und politi­schen Impli­ka­tionen. Wie machbar ist es\, die Tempe­ratur wieder zu senken? Welche Auswir­kungen könnten ver­mie­den werden\, wenn die globale Tempe­ratur wieder sinkt\, ver­gli­chen mit einer Erwär­mung\, die über 1\,5°C bleibt? Welche Schäden ent­ste­hen\, selbst wenn die Tempe­ratur vorüber­gehend über 1\,5°C steigt?
