.<\/span>The current state of libe\u00adra\u00adlism is a cause for great concern. The most recent and most conse\u00adquential example of the domi\u00adnant illi\u00adbe\u00adral swing is the stun\u00adning come\u00adback of Donald Trump in the United States. Right-wing popu\u00adlist forces are in govern\u00adment in Italy, Slo\u00adva\u00adkia, Hungary, the Nether\u00adlands and many other count\u00adries. Count\u00adries like Poland, where a natio\u00adnal-popu\u00adlist govern\u00adment has been voted out, are the excep\u00adtion. To get out of the liberal defen\u00adsive, there needs to be a better under\u00adstanding of the causes of the crisis of liberal demo\u00adcracy and the rise of popu\u00adlism. Fur\u00adther\u00admore, fresh ideas are needed on how liberal demo\u00adcracy should be renewed to regain support domesti\u00adcally and inter\u00adna\u00adtio\u00adnally. Key ques\u00adti\u00adons we want to discuss:<\/p>\n

  • Do the insti\u00adtu\u00adtions of demo\u00adcracy need to be refor\u00admed, and the possi\u00adbi\u00adlities of demo\u00adcra\u00adtic parti\u00adci\u00adpation expanded?<\/li>\n
  • How can the perfor\u00admance of liberal demo\u00adcra\u00adcies be impro\u00adved in the face of huge poli\u00adti\u00adcal, eco\u00adno\u00admic and ecolo\u00adgical challenges?<\/li>\n
  • How should they deal with core issues on the popu\u00adlist agenda \u2013 such as the issue of migration?<\/li>\n
  • What follows from the concept of a \u201crobust demo\u00adcracy\u201d \u2013 and how do we avoid slip\u00adping into an autho\u00adri\u00adtarian logic in the name of defen\u00adding freedom?<\/li>\n
  • How should liberal demo\u00adcra\u00adcies deal with the new sys\u00adte\u00admic con\u00adflict with autho\u00adri\u00adtarian powers, espe\u00adci\u00adally China and Russia?<\/li>\n
  • Which gaps and malde\u00adve\u00adlo\u00adp\u00adments in libe\u00adra\u00adlism itself contri\u00adbuted to its crisis?<\/li>\n
