We cor\u00addi\u00adally invite you to an in-depth conver\u00adsation with Maksym But\u00adke\u00advych<\/strong>, one of Ukraine\u2019s most pro\u00admi\u00adnent human rights defen\u00adders, on justice, human rights, and the future of Ukraine and Europe.<\/p>\n

Maksym But\u00adke\u00advych will share his expe\u00adri\u00adence of spen\u00adding more than two years in Russian cap\u00adti\u00advity, where he was sub\u00adjec\u00adted to a fabri\u00adcated trial and unjust impri\u00adsonment. He will also provide insight into state\u00adments made by his Russian captors, who asser\u00adted that Russia\u2019s aggres\u00adsion would not stop with Ukraine but extend to other Euro\u00adpean count\u00adries. This dis\u00adcus\u00adsion will also address the situa\u00adtion of ille\u00adgally detai\u00adned civi\u00adli\u00adans and Ukrai\u00adnian pri\u00adsoners of war, high\u00adlight\u00ading why their fate is not only a Ukrai\u00adnian concern but a broader inter\u00adna\u00adtional issue. Fur\u00adther\u00admore, we will explore the current state of human rights in Ukraine. We will also discuss the book \u201eAm rich\u00adti\u00adgen Platz: Ein ukrai\u00adni\u00adscher Friedens\u00adak\u00adtivist im Krieg\u201c (202<\/em>4, Anthea Verlag), which con\u00adta\u00adins texts by Maksym But\u00adke\u00advych. The book will be available for purchase at the event.<\/p>\n

\nAbout Maksym Butkevych<\/strong><\/p>\n

Maksym But\u00adke\u00advych has been a leading human rights advo\u00adcate in Ukraine for over a decade, fight\u00ading against discri\u00admi\u00adnation and for the rights of refu\u00adgees and migrants. End of Febru\u00adary 2022, he volun\u00adt\u00adarily joined the Ukrai\u00adnian Armed Forces. On June 24, 2022, he was cap\u00adtu\u00adred by the Russian army in the Luhansk region and later sen\u00adten\u00adced to 13 years in prison based on fabri\u00adcated charges. After signi\u00adficant inter\u00adna\u00adtional pres\u00adsure and advo\u00adcacy, Maksym was finally released on October 18, 2024, as part of a pri\u00adsoner exch\u00adange invol\u00adving 95 Ukrai\u00adnian defenders.<\/p>\n

Since his release, Maksym has resumed his human rights work, focu\u00adsing on pro\u00adtec\u00adting the rights of ille\u00adgally detai\u00adned civi\u00adli\u00adans and pri\u00adsoners of war, coun\u00adtering Russian propa\u00adganda and hate speech, and reforming Ukraine\u2019s migra\u00adtion poli\u00adcies. He is a member of the Expert Council of the Center for Civil Liber\u00adties and serves on the exe\u00adcu\u00adtive council of PEN Ukraine.<\/p>\n
