Liberal demo\u00adcracy is under pres\u00adsure. Across the Western world, popu\u00adlist move\u00adments have surged \u2013 fuelled by disil\u00adlu\u00adsionment, nati\u00advism, and a growing dis\u00adtrust in liberal insti\u00adtu\u00adtions and the liberal elite. How did we arrive at this point, and what can be done to restore confi\u00addence in liberal ideals and their promise for a better world of tomorrow?<\/p>\n

The new volume Liberal Response to Popu\u00adlism<\/a> (De Gruyter 2025), edited by Karen Horn, Stefan Kolev, and Julian F. M\u00fcller, offers a multi\u00adfaceted exami\u00adnation of this chall\u00adenge. From the psy\u00adcho\u00adlogy of radical\u00adization to the lure of sove\u00adreig\u00adnty and from histo\u00adrical reflec\u00adtions to forward-looking policy innova\u00adtions, the book explo\u00adres how libe\u00adra\u00adlism can meet the popu\u00adlist moment with clarity, crea\u00adti\u00advity, and renewed conviction.<\/p>\n

Spea\u00adk\u00aders<\/strong><\/p>\n

Karen Horn<\/strong>
\nKaren Horn is a hono\u00adrary pro\u00adfes\u00adsor of eco\u00adno\u00admics at the Uni\u00adver\u00adsity of Erfurt (Germany), where she teaches the history of eco\u00adno\u00admic thought and eco\u00adno\u00admic jour\u00adna\u00adlism. She is parti\u00adcu\u00adlarly inte\u00adres\u00adted in the work of Adam Smith, Fried\u00adrich A. Hayek, Walter Eucken, and James M. Buchanan, and in the tra\u00addi\u00adtion of libe\u00adra\u00adlism gene\u00adrally, with a special focus on ordoli\u00adbe\u00adralism. At the Verein f\u00fcr Social\u00adpo\u00adlitik, the asso\u00adcia\u00adtion of German-spea\u00adking econo\u00admists, she is a member of the com\u00admit\u00adtee for the history of eco\u00adno\u00admic thought. She serves as an editor of Perspek\u00adtiven der Wirtschafts\u00adpo\u00adlitik, one of the two aca\u00adde\u00admic jour\u00adnals of the Verein, and is the co-chair of the NOUS network. She holds a Ph.D. from the Uni\u00adver\u00adsity of Lau\u00adsanne (Switz\u00aderland).<\/p>\n

Stefan Kolev<\/strong>
\nStefan Kolev is the aca\u00adde\u00admic direc\u00adtor of the Ludwig Erhard Forum for Economy and Society in Berlin and a pro\u00adfes\u00adsor of poli\u00adti\u00adcal economy at the Uni\u00adver\u00adsity of Applied Sci\u00aden\u00adces Zwickau (Germany). His rese\u00adarch centers on the history of eco\u00adno\u00admic thought, espe\u00adci\u00adally ordoli\u00adbe\u00adralism and Aus\u00adtrian eco\u00adno\u00admics, consti\u00adtu\u00adtional eco\u00adno\u00admics, and the future of the Social Market Economy. He is a co-editor of the ORDO Year\u00adbook for the Order of Economy and Society and of the Journal of Con\u00adtex\u00adtual Eco\u00adno\u00admics \u2013 Schmol\u00adlers Jahr\u00adbuch. He spent his last sabba\u00adtical at the James Madison Program in Ame\u00adri\u00adcan Ideals and Insti\u00adtu\u00adtions at Prince\u00adton Uni\u00adver\u00adsity (USA). He holds a Ph.D. in eco\u00adno\u00admics from the Uni\u00adver\u00adsity of Hamburg (Germany).<\/p>\n

Aris Tran\u00adti\u00addis
\n<\/strong>Lec\u00adtu\u00adrer in Inter\u00adna\u00adtional Rela\u00adti\u00adons and Poli\u00adtics, Uni\u00adver\u00adsity of Lincoln. His rese\u00adarch stands at the inter\u00adsection of poli\u00adtics and poli\u00adti\u00adcal economy, with publi\u00adca\u00adtions on cli\u00adente\u00adlism, domi\u00adnant party systems and semi-aut\u00adho\u00adri\u00ad\u00adta\u00adrian regimes. He has published on the concept of demo\u00adcracy and hegem\u00adony and has written exten\u00adsively on the Greek crisis.<\/p>\n

Karo\u00adlina Wigura (Mode\u00adra\u00adtion)<\/strong>
\nKaro\u00adlina Wigura is senior Fellow at the Center for Liberal Moder\u00adnity. She is Asso\u00adciate Pro\u00adfes\u00adsor at Warsaw Uni\u00adver\u00adsity and a Member of the Board at Kultura Libe\u00adralna Foun\u00adda\u00adtion. Wigura was awarded fellow\u00adships at the Wissen\u00adschafts\u00adkolleg zu Berlin and the Robert Bosch Academy. From 2016 to 2018, she was a Co-Direc\u00adtor of the Polish Program \u201eKnow\u00adledge Bridges\u201c at St Antony\u2019s College at the Uni\u00adver\u00adsity of Oxford. Tog\u00ade\u00adther with Jaros\u0142aw Kuisz, she recently published Post-Trau\u00adma\u00adtic Sove\u00adreig\u00adnty. An Essay (Suhr\u00adkamp 2023). She is a regular contri\u00adbutor to The New York Times and The Guardian.<\/p>\n
