Do trau\u00adma\u00adtic experi\u00adences shape nations and socie\u00adties? If so, how? In the case of Poland, histo\u00adrical traumas seem to leave Poles fearful, anxious, and unhappy. Yet, in moments of crisis, these traumas enable them to mobi\u00adlize and prepare to fight. Germany\u2019s history of vio\u00adlence against ethnic and social groups has perma\u00adnently raised ques\u00adti\u00adons about vic\u00adtim\u00adhood, guilt, and belonging.<\/p>\n

History shapes our contem\u00adporary relati\u00adonships, obses\u00adsions, and fears. What causes this, and how can one break free from it? Are we doomed to con\u00adstantly remind our\u00adsel\u00adves of our dif\u00adfi\u00adcult history? Is trauma passed down through genera\u00adtions? What does trauma reveal about Poles and Germans? What unites and divides us? How has history shaped our daily beha\u00advi\u00adors, fears, and obses\u00adsions? During the debate, Asal Dardan<\/strong> and Karo\u00adlina Wigura<\/strong> will address these ques\u00adti\u00adons. Katha\u00adrina Blum\u00adberg-Stan\u00adkie\u00adwicz<\/strong> will mode\u00adrate the evening.<\/p>\n

Asal Dardan<\/strong> is a free\u00adlance essay\u00adist and writer. She holds degrees in cul\u00adtu\u00adral studies from the Uni\u00adver\u00adsity of Hil\u00addes\u00adheim and in Middle Eastern studies from the Uni\u00adver\u00adsity Lund. Her 2021 coll\u00adec\u00adtion of essays Reflec\u00adtions of a Bar\u00adba\u00adrian<\/a> (Hoff\u00admann und Campe, 2022) explo\u00adres topics such as origin, exclu\u00adsion, racism, and femin\u00adinity. In her recent book Trau\u00adma\u00adland: Sear\u00adching for Traces in Germany\u2019s Past and Present<\/a> (Rohwolt, 2025) she con\u00adfronts ent\u00adren\u00adched German dis\u00adcour\u00adses on memory.<\/p>\n

Dr. habil. Karo\u00adlina Wigura<\/strong> is a his\u00adto\u00adrian of ideas, socio\u00adlogist, and jour\u00adna\u00adlist. She is member of the Board of Kultura Libe\u00adralna Foun\u00adda\u00adtion, based in Warsaw, and a Senior Fellow of the Center for Liberal Moder\u00adnity, based in Berlin. Wigura is also lec\u00adtu\u00adrer at Warsaw University\u2019s Insti\u00adtute of Socio\u00adlogy and focuses on the poli\u00adti\u00adcal philo\u00adsophy of the 20th century and emo\u00adti\u00adons in poli\u00adtics, as well as socio\u00adlogy and ethics of memory, parti\u00adcu\u00adlarly transi\u00adtional justice, histo\u00adrical guilt, and recon\u00adci\u00adliation. Wigura was awarded fellow\u00adships at Insti\u00adtute of Advan\u00adced Studies in Berlin, Robert Bosch Academy, Insti\u00adtute of Human Sci\u00aden\u00adces in Vienna, German Mar\u00adshall Fund, and St. Antony\u2019s College at Uni\u00adver\u00adsity of Oxford. In 2008, she recei\u00adved the Grand Press prize for her inter\u00adview with J\u00fcrgen Haber\u00admas \u201cEurope in death para\u00adly\u00adsis.\u201d Wigura is the author of \u201ePosttrau\u00adma\u00adtische Souve\u00adr\u00e4\u00adnit\u00e4t\u201d, \u201eEndo. Sztuka akcept\u00adacji choroby\u201c, \u201ePolka atei\u00adstka kontra Polak katolik\u201c, \u201eWynalazek nowoc\u00adzesnego serca\u201c. Her work has also been published in The Guar\u00addian, The New York Times, Neue Zuer\u00adcher Zeitung, Gazeta Wybor\u00adcza, and other periodicals.<\/span><\/p>\n

Katha\u00adrina Blum\u00adberg-Stan\u00adkie\u00adwicz, <\/strong>has been a rese\u00adar\u00adcher and lec\u00adtu\u00adrer at the Euro\u00adpean Uni\u00adver\u00adsity Via\u00addrina in Frank\u00adfurt (Oder) focu\u00adsing on migra\u00adtion, in- and exclu\u00adsion, and belon\u00adging. She lives and works as a free\u00adlance cul\u00adtu\u00adral sci\u00aden\u00adtist in Berlin, where she co-founded the initia\u00adtive Between the Poles<\/a>. Since 2022, she has co-curated the colla\u00adbo\u00adrative online repo\u00adsi\u00adtory Trauma Tables vs. Waiting<\/a>.<\/p>\n
